Contribution of “user confidence” to characteristics of online search for educational information in school students

Some research results show that “user confidence” has a significant impact on the characteristics of search activity on the Internet, in particular, on the amount of scanned information. In addition, the amount of scanned information is also determined by the cognitive style of the person. However, the data about interaction of these factors in online search behaviour is not complete enough.

Thus, we conducted an experimental study aimed at analysing the characteristics of online search for educational information (on the model of a simple and complex task) in field dependent and field independent schoolchildren. The results show that “user conf dence” has a dif erent impact on the amount of scanned information in field-dependent and field independent school students: field-independent students with high “user conf dence” scan significantly smaller amount of information (regardless of the type of search task); field-dependent students scan more information in the case of “user uncertainty” in the situation of complex search task, whereas for a simple search task, the level of “user conf dence” does not af ect the amount of scanned information.
